Interior Space`-60`x36` by Margaret Atkinson :: You need to be a member to contact artists →Join :: Portfolio \'Interior Space\' Series From Body of work \'Tulips From Amsterdam\'1997-
I became enchanted when I encountered what was to become known as \'The Elephant Bar\' in Amsterdam. A mural of two elephants adorned the wall of this bar and a Turkish lantern gave a beautiful lace pattern across the whole of this area. As this related to my fine art practice, this experience haunted me when I returned to London and so started me on a journey which I still find fascinating. As a child I would draw faces in my schoolbooks and am still fascinated by the many archetypes that mask the interior human psyche. The bar interior had a tremendous energy but the hum of a crowd, the buzz of interaction can sometimes give a sense of isolation and vulnerability which I have tried to capture in this series of work. The work addresses gender, identity, fragility of the human psyche. I have used variations on the colour of the bar to create an atmosphere, together with lace to build up layers and texture in some of this work. oil on canvas | |
