Oes Gafr Eto? 2011
(60 x 130 x 175 cm)
Wood, wallpaper, papier mache, acrylic eyes, wax, Welsh sheep fleece, mixed media.
Those of us of a certain age will remember the little Swiss/German weather house barometers that indicate the weather. A typical weather house has two doors side by side. The left side has a woman, the right side a man. The female figure comes out of the house when the weather is sunny and dry, while the male comes out to indicate rain.
Oes Gafr Eto? is an over-sized weather house presented as a slate roofed Welsh cottage complete with a front parlour. This work explores the decline of traditions and values from the past. The title of the work references a folk song sung to me as a child by my Taid.
