The Path of Needles? 2011 (120 x 80 x 78 cm)
Wax, acrylic eyes, papier mache, pins and needles.
The Path of Needles? is a pin-cushion doll that is a tribute to my daughter as she hovers with trepidation and anticipation on the cusp of childhood and puberty. The doll seems awkwardly large and is squeezed into my daughter’s St David’s Day outfit which she has long outgrown. The Path of Needles? references the original story of Red Riding Hood where she is asked to choose between the path of pins or the path of needles. The choice can be perceived to be no choice whatsoever and both would inevitably be painful. It is also difficult to determine whether those choices will cause pain for her or for those around her. Pins can be seen as symbols of passage into womanhood whilst needles reference sexual maturity.
