Doll Asleep

A still life painting of a doll with eyes shut. I loved drawing and painting this doll upside down and many people have tried to turn it around but it just doesn't work that way.
It reminded me of a photograph pose my partner had taken of me one morning in bed. My mom picked up the photographs from the local chemist for me(before digital imaging when you hadn't got a clue what was on them and no delete button!) My mother said she was really embarrassed when she discovered what was in there and that is why the man in the shop had given her a funny look. I was scared to open the envelope but what it was/is a photograph taken at that angle that could be viewed as the voyeur of a somewhat dodgy scene. Although semi clothed it is more seductive to view the position at this angle taken. I have since loved the artist Marlene Dumas who has done similar scenes as this of prostitutes and murdered women have also been portrayed like this. This doll with red curly hair features in many paintings, she is wearing a 'beautiful' handmade crochet dress.
