Still from video documentation of socially engaged performance Camera: running on tripod Medium: video projection of the sea, audio of the sea, shopping cart filled with junk food, cords, and see-through plastic sheets. Duration: approximately 30 minutes. Description: This image documents the aftermath of a participatory performance where the audience is tied to the artist with ropes. Forced into an accomplice, the audience tries to prevent the artist from throwing all sorts of junk food against the wall and all over a video projection depicting the sea. The participatory performance turned into an strenuous struggle of resistance from all sides that brought attention on the sensorial aspect of the artwork engaging the bodies in activities of smelling, listening, touching, looking, using muscle force, perspiring, breathing, and screaming. Not only that, it also highlighted the importance of the second part of the art piece, the clean up of the mess. SEA here stands both for Socially Engaged Art and for sea. | |
