Wovon es kein Zweites gibt

by Caroline List :: Contact :: Portfolio

Wovon es kein Zweites gibt (“something there cannot be a second one of”) started with a sudden memory of reading a particular scene in “Sofie’s World” by Jostein Gaarder as a teenager, in which the philosophy teacher explains Plato’s Theory of Forms by comparing it to a set of biscuit molds. Although the basic shapes of the gingerbread men are the same, no biscuit is completely identical.
With regards to my questions of what makes an individual unique (i.e. what is inside the mold) I used the medium of clay to make a connection to my fascination with embryology. Flat, basic shapes of figures were cut out with a biscuit cutter and then rolled up in various ways into three-dimensional bodies, to draw an analogy/to give hints to how a ball of cells divides itself into different layers, begins to take on a c-shaped curvature and starts to develop limbs and organs to eventually develop into a unique individual human being.
