My painting based practice extends into drawing, sculpture and installation: Embodying contradiction and making manifest the fragility and absurdity of life.

Years ago, in America, I stopped using rectangular stretched canvas & started building makeshift constructions to paint on, that better reflected my situation and my state of mind. I wrote a thesis exploring the nature of art by comparing art from different cultures, and was excited (still am) by possibilities that surface when exploring the nature of art in the light of cultural and societal conditioning: things don?t have to be as they are; anything goes; anything is possible. Yet, out of all the myriad of equally valid alternatives, choices still have to be made: nowadays I sometimes choose to start with a rectangular canvas or piece of paper, but more often I start by building an irregular shaped construction to paint on.
The process of creating keeps me going: an engagement with the physical sensuality of the materials; the alchemy of transformation. I like the challenge of combining disparate elements, & the surprises that sometimes ensue; dealing with ?real? shapes & textures as well as with painted ones.
In general I work as openly as possible. Inspiration comes from the totality of experience: things I think, feel, hear, remember, as well as what I see; and I interpret it using a very broad art vocabulary in a variety of media: crossing boundaries between drawing, painting and sculpture. The work is to do with questioning everything; making connections; and revelling in the language of art.
Looking at non-western cultures has increased my understanding of what it means to be part of western culture, & the rich heritage I was born into.
We all create our own reality. My work explores the nature of reality, both gentle & brutal: the fragility of the world and our engagement with it.
