Above Phase 1.

Six live paintings in bacteria, making reference to John Everett Millais’ Ophelia. The paintings were eaten and destroyed by the new life of the bacteria filmed in time-lapse.

In Shakespeare’s play ‘Hamlet’ Ophelia drowns and is suspected of suicide. Here Ophelia finds her true self in a place between life and death receiving messages across time and space on an electronic answer phone. (Bacterial research funded by The Wellcome Trust in collaboration with microbiologist Dr Simon Park.) Sound created with poetry left on an answer phone by the public.

Poetry for Phase 3, of the project as a part of a collaborative process will be completed in Chile. Chilean poet Roberto Contreras contributing and coordinating input from the Chilean public in 2018. I asked them to remember its the beauty
of all the different voices, old and young, rich poor, struggling to speak in English etc. that will make the work effective.
