Bundle Sketchbook

For this work, my idea was to develop and build a bold, playful and colourful book, playing with crossovers between sketchbook, artist book, sculpture and room-filling installation. It evolved into a portable concertina book that could be stored and carried in a suitcase but at the same time, due to its variable size, can be adapted to different exhibition spaces and can even be extended to fill an entire room.
The rather flexible form of the book is a reflection of how I perceive the gathering, storing and developing of a constantly increasing multitude of thoughts, ideas and “sketches in the mind”. Ideas can be kept and carried around in a private space like a book or the mind, but can also appear at the most unlikely places, can take inspiration from them, adapt themselves accordingly and grow into large ideas and concepts.
The bundles and bags in this work are both colourful, relief-like details and can also stand as metaphors for small, protected thoughts which can travel, emerge and grow into bigger ideas in the future. I am fascinated by bundles and closed packages. Becoming part of sculptures, they can be suggestive rather than descriptive. On the outside they can give hints of what is hidden inside, but will never reveal it completely. This play with enigmatic inside and visible outside gives inexhaustible possibilities for the viewer to literally fill the packages with own associations and ideas.
This work is also about abstraction and what it means to me on a very personal level. At the time of working on it, I lost two important friends. Developing figurative or language-related work would have been impossible at that moment. Abstract work (similar to music) appeared to be the stronger and most suitable form to express my feelings.
