| Nora Geist is a photographer whose work sits at the fault-line between beauty and unease: portraits, places, and constructed scenes in which the subject remains unmistakably human—never anonymous. Informed by psychoanalytic training, her images attend closely to gesture, defence, desire, and what a photograph asks of the viewer. Moving between documentary-leaning observation and staged tableaux, Geist is concerned with what looking does: who controls the frame, who is permitted to witness, and how the viewer becomes implicated not by shock, but by recognition. She works across black-and-white film, hand-coloured studies, and colour photography, drawn to the authority of monochrome, the tenderness of hand colour, and the immediacy of colour when the world must feel unavoidably present.
