I am a practising artist and part-time teacher of Art at a secondary school in the West Midlands. I specialise in wood relief sculpture, and my themes are predominantly figurative. My objective is to produce a body of work for exhibition. At first it seemed a daunting task to simply understand how I could express my ideas with what I believed was an unforgiving media.
But I found that once I gained this understanding, I learned to work with it. I was able to create art that articulated what I wanted to say.
I think of myself as a traditional artist, and the process of of manipulating wood with my tools, is central to the process. Before I even touch the wood I carry out research and make detailed tonal drawings. When I am confident with my idea, I begin. I am intrigued by the human form, and my carvings reflect both its beauty and complexity.. |
